  2. CHINA week 101
    Political Front:
Corruption has badly affected Chinese image at an international level leading to the government’s efforts to deal with the menace. A total of 106,626 officials across China were penalized for disciplinary violations from January to November last year.
    Geo-strategic Front:
China has asked the US to cancel and cease arms deal with Taiwan. Meanwhile China has extended support for establishing dialogue between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.
China has also reiterated its calls for diplomatic efforts on the Iranian nuclear issue as the United States seeks sanctions against Iran. Further more China has asked the international community to increase aid and assistance to Afghanistan.
China’s efforts to boost ties with Uruguay, Britain, EU, Mexico, Africa, Singapore, Nigeria, Italy, Chili, Norway, Turkey, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan have been significant.
    Economic Front:
China has announced to encourage private enterprises to invest in publishing business. A survey by global marketing research firm ACNielsen has indicated remarkable growth in Chinese consumer confidence. Meanwhile Chinese stock exchange remained fluctuated. Total revenue in China's tourism industry is expected to grow 13 percent to hit 1.4 trillion yuan (205 billion U.S. dollars) in 2010, as the country has introduced favorable policies to back the industry.
    Social Front:
China has declared foreign workers an asset for the country’s development. A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader called for intensified efforts to enhance media supervision to better channel public opinions and foster healthy social trends. One of the most important developments has been a remarkable decrease in the swine flu.

  3. based on week 101 report........will U.S. give any importance to China's protest against U.S. arms sales to Taiwan?

  4. US has always extended support to Taiwan and arms sale is yet another such move.
For the last one year China and the US have been trying hard to pacify their relation... hence complex situation has developed. Chinese strong reaction against the US arms sale has increased gulf between the two....that had to be bridged.
Keeping this situation in mind decision making for the US apparently seems to be a tough task yet close US-Taiwan ties as well as recent statements made by various US officials like Defence Secretary Robert Gates....indicate that arms deal could hardly suffer despite Chinese protest....!

  5. CHINA (report#103)
Political Front: Senior Chinese leader has encouraged judges and judicial workers to improve their work at grass-roots levels in a bid to ensure social justice and the people's legal rights.
Geo-strategic Front: Chinese growing ties with East Asian countries, Japan and Austria grabbed attention. China has also provided Pakistan with security scanners. Meanwhile UN has appreciated China for its assistance for earthquake victims of Haiti. Lastly, the Google controversy has caused a strain in US-China relations.
Social Front: Signs of expansion of the income gap between China's urban and rural residents have emerged amid the official data showing otherwise strong economic growth. Meanwhile five officials have been removed from their posts and deprived of their Party membership for alleged corruption after a probe into a landslide that killed 277 people.
Economic Front: Google has postponed the launch of two mobile phones produced specifically for the Chinese market.
China's economy expanded 8.7 percent in 2009 from a year earlier, exceeding the government's annual growth target of 8 percent. The country posted a drastic increase in fixed-asset investment in 2009 as the world's third largest economy aimed to spend more on property, roads and other infrastructures to sustain the economic growth. China's industrial added value also rose 11 percent in 2009 from a year earlier. Meanwhile exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from 2008, and imports reached 1.01 trillion U.S. dollars, down 11.2 percent from a year earlier. More than 11 million jobs have also been created. §

  6. In recent months, China and the U.S. have been at loggerheads over a slew of prickly issues: the U.S. trade deficit with China; U.S. pressure to revalue China's currency; and U.S. criticism of China's human rights record, its ethnic and religious policies in Tibet and Xinjiang.
In recent weeks, Washington and Beijing have traded sharp words over China's Internet policy after the search engine company Google threatened to pull out of China, citing problems of censorship and hacking attacks.
In the coming months, President Barack Obama is expected to meet the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader when he visits Washington. The Nobel Peace prize laureate said he advocates genuine autonomy for Tibetans, not Tibet independence. Beijing regards him as not just a religious figure but a dangerous "separatist," a politician who wishes to sever Tibet from China.

  8. • China accuses US of online warfare in Iran
The United States used "online warfare" to stir up unrest in Iran after last year's elections, the Chinese Communist party newspaper claimed today, hitting back at Hillary Clinton's speech last week about internet freedom.

Geo-strategic Front: China remained active in enhancing collaboration with various countries of the globe including; Tanzania, Syria and Singapore.
The US President went forward with a controversial meeting with the Dalai Lama despite warnings from China. In the case of cyber attacks against Google it is suspected that Chinese students and military were involved in the incident. The Military however has denied these allegations.
Economic Front: Despite the fact that China's natural gas output rose by 7.7 percent last year, it fell short of ever rising domestic demand. The country produced 83 billion cubic meters of natural gas last year, while consumed 87.45 billion cubic meters, up 11.5 percent year on year. Taiwan has expressed positive hopes regarding economic cooperation with China. China, Japan and South Korea have also launched a joint study on trilateral Free trade deal. Meanwhile Chinese Premier visited Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region over the weekend, spending the Spring Festival, or Chinese lunar New Year, with local villagers.
